Symposium on “Prostitution as Male Violence Against Women”
On the 9th and 10th of July 2024, DoubleX organized the first international symposium in Lebanon and the Arab world on “Prostitution as Male Violence against Women”, at the National Library in Beirut.
The symposium gathered national and international experts in the field with representatives from local and international GBV and humanitarian NGOs, UN agencies and embassies in Lebanon, academics, and media, to inform, challenge common misconceptions, advocate for policy change, and encourage the exchange of views on the topic of prostitution.
Drawing from research, available data, lived experiences of survivors, and the knowledge of the experts in the field, the symposium presented valuable information about the prostitution system, its components and manifestations, its root causes, and effects on women and society. It also looked closely at the impact of the different legal frameworks and advanced solutions and priorities of action for overcoming the sexual exploitation of women and the commodification of their bodies.
